Romanian cuisine is a diverse blend of different dishes from several traditions with which it has come into contact, but it also maintains its own character. It has been greatly influenced by Ottoman cuisine while it also includes influences from the cuisines of other neighbours, such as Germans, Serbians, and Hungarians.
Sarmale is a dish of minced meat (beef, pork, and lamb), rice, onions, and various spices, including salt, pepper and various local herbs. All of these ingredients are mixed together and then rolled into large fresh cabbage leaves. The combination is then boiled for several hours.
Another favorite Romanian dish that is popular during the summer. The recipe can vary a lot....in the late summer we put in eggplant and in the earlier summer zucchini; whatever is best for the season. The cuisine is served with rice.
